From sensor size matching to spectral range, we systematically organize precision optical lens selection methods, and provide FAQ answers and download entries.
Confirm each of the following seven dimensions and you can quickly narrow down a matching lens model.
The maximum sensor size supported by the lens must cover the camera sensor, otherwise vignetting or dark corners appear. Common formats: 1/3", 1/2.5", 1/1.8", 2/3", 1", 1.1", 4/3".
Choose focal length based on the target field of view and installation distance: a short focal length covers a wide field of view, a long focal length suits distant targets. For precision measurement, telecentric lenses are recommended to fix magnification and eliminate perspective error.
Lens resolution should match the camera pixel count to avoid the lens becoming the bottleneck. A 2 MP camera can use a 5 MP lens; higher-resolution cameras should be paired with 10 MP / 12 MP / 20 MP or above lenses.
The mount must match the camera body. Common mounts: C, CS, M12 (S-mount), M42, F. The CS mount has a shorter flange distance; when used with a C-mount lens an adapter ring is required.
A manual iris is compact and low-cost, suitable for fixed-illuminance scenes; DC auto-iris adjusts light intake with ambient illuminance, suitable for outdoor day/night monitoring; P-Iris is controlled by a video drive signal, suitable for specific IPC platforms.
For visible-light imaging choose standard lenses; for IR or UV bands match a lens with the corresponding spectral range, such as 900-1700nm SWIR lenses, UV lenses and NIR lenses, to ensure transmittance and image quality in the target band.
Precision measurement focuses on telecentricity (the angle between the chief ray and the optical axis) and TV distortion; the smaller the telecentricity and the lower the distortion, the better the dimension measurement consistency. For ordinary imaging, low-distortion fixed-focal lenses are acceptable.
